This class will include a short mindfulness practice, suitable for beginners or those who have practiced before, and then a discussion on how mindfulness can help cultivate happiness that is not dependent on external things -- what might be called joy in pure being. We will explore how to develop and sustain a sense of deep contentment from the simple (yet miraculous!) fact of our aliveness, and we will consider the difference between this sort of joy and more hedonic pleasures (such as the happiness we get from socializing, achieving, or buying things).
