Resilience: On Surviving and Thriving

The Columbia Law School Mindfulness Program invites you to a meditation for faculty, staff, and students, held via live-stream on Wednesday, November 11th from 12:45-1:25pm. These sessions are oriented to beginners and also open to those more experienced with mindfulness practices, and they include guided meditation as well as discussion of mindfulness meditation. Participants are also invited to bring lunch to these sessions and enjoy their meal in community. This week's session will be led by Yael Shy and hosted by Mary Herrington (bios below).

Yael Shy is the Senior Director of the NYU Global Spiritual Life Center and the NYU 'Of Many' Institute for Multifaith and Spiritual Leadership, as well as the Founder and Director of MindfulNYU, the largest campus-wide mindfulness initiative in the country. She teaches regularly at MNDFL in NYC and is a sought after speaker, teacher, and writer on meditation, higher education and mindfulness. She is the author of the award-winning book, What Now? Meditation for Your Twenties and Beyond (Parallax, 2017) #whatnowbook.

Mary J. L. Herrington was born in South Korea and immigrated to the US at the age of 2, growing up in Michigan, Virginia (for barely a semester), North Carolina, and Missouri. After having gone to 8 different schools by the time she graduated from high school, Mary moved out east to New York, where she earned her B.A. in English & Comparative Literature from Columbia University, Columbia College, a year of which she spent studying at Cambridge University. Mary earned her J.D. at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where she was editor of the Journal of International Economic Law and elected to the Council of Student Representatives. Following law school, she moved to London, where she practiced corporate law at Paul, Weiss  and Norton Rose Fulbright. In addition, Mary founded two media and event production companies in London and a solo legal practice in New York. Currently, she is the Director of the Reuben Mark Initiative for Organizational Character & Leadership at Columbia Law School, in which role she oversees the In-House Counsel Program, and also serves as the Associate Director of Career Advising for Dual Degrees within the Office of Career Services. A cellist, Mary enjoys playing solo and chamber music repertoire. She resides in Brooklyn with her husband, two children, and two dogs.
